George Douglas MACHIN (‘Mac’)

‘Mac’ George Douglas Machin, sometimes known as ‘Captain Mac’ was known locally in his village of Dallington as a charming but eccentric character who was a ‘Fleet Street cartoonist’. He served as a balloon observer in the First World War, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also gained fame as a cartoonist for his work on the soldiers newspapers, ‘Blighty’ magazine. His output was prolific and his signature, ‘Mac’ appeared on drawings in scores of publications. He drew war posters for the Goverment in both world wars. He illustrated several sporting cigarette cards sets during the 1930s.”

Here are the slides from the talk given by Roy Iremonger for the Local History Group (please note that there are 91 illustrated slides and even after reducing the file size this is still 4MBm so may take a while to open)

  1. Some responses to the original April 2013 post about Roy’s talk:
Esme Render: “Hello, In 1974 I met George Machin at Pyke House Battle he did a caricature of myself and several school friends. Having seen the slides of his life I feel very privilege to have met him.”

“I have a collection of George Douglas Machin original cartoons and caricatures, they are were drawn in the WW1 era and some are even drawn on the reverse of aerial photos taken from his Spencer baloon. I intend selling these at auction later this year. I have about 30 of his originals among a total of 80 other sketches and cartoons by other WW1 pilots and friends. If anyone is interested I have taken photos of all of my collection and they are stored on my computer files.”
[Editor: “Thanks for this information James. If you’d be willing to share the files with me, I’d like to display more GDM cartoons on this site – with acknowledgement of the source, ownership and any copyright restrictions. Also, please let us know when the originals are coming up for auction.”]
“Hopefully my sketches and cartoons will be going to auction in November at Dominic Winter Auctions. they have auctions that specialise in aviation memorabilia. my collection includes watercolours, pen and ink caricatures and cartoons and pencil sketches. I have included a few of Machin’s on attachment to give you an idea of what I have.Regards James Miller FIPG. “

    1. Have you sold the cartoons and sketches. I would be very interested if not. If they have gone to auction, have they been sold yet. Tim

      1. Tim – this reference to a sale was sent by James in 2013 years ago. I haven’t heard anything since from him but can’t find details online of the auction mentioned

      2. I have not sold any of the cartoons and sketches that I have. i decided that I am not interested in sending them to auction. Cheers Jim
