My name is Sheena Griffin and my grandfather Charles Young owned a farm in Dallington in 1934/35. My father tells a story of a hot air balloon landing on his fathers farm around that time with 3 Belgium men aboard. We are trying to investigate this happening and would be grateful is anyone can elaborate.
Apparently the Sussex Express sent a reporter and pictures where taken, I believe even the local school children visited the farm the next day to see the balloon.

Sheena
Dear Sheena,
I was pleased to read your message because I had heard about this event but because I could not find any one to confirm the story, I wondered whether it might have happened in Dallington,Northampton.
On June 6th 1935 the Balloon “Belgica” piloted by Ernst DeMuyte flew from Brussells to Dallington. I believe it was carrying letters, making it one of the first air mail deliveries.
The same balloon and pilot had previously won the Gordon Bennett Cup in 1923.
My reference for this comes from Berman’s Postal History of Balloon Flights but I think I came across the information surfing the net on a wet afternoon.
I hope you find this useful and if you have any idea where the landing took place, I would love to hear from you.
Regards,
Roy
