I am gradually transcribing the Census returns for Dallington in a format that aims to include key information about each household and the date and place of birth of individuals. The original census forms are variable in their accuracy and spelling and they rarely include house names even where those existed. In some cases we can deduce the address by comparison with other years, or by reconstructing the enumerator’s journey around the village. I have corrected some of the more obvious spelling errors, but many remain. For more information about individuals, you will need to log in to one of the genealogy sites such as Ancestry. If you don’t have a subscription you should be able to consult these records through East Sussex Library.

- The enclosed file has a list of names recorded for Dallington in the 1921 Census, along with their date and place of birth. (Source: Find My Past). I have not yet attempted to correct transcription errors, or to infer specific addresses by comparison with other records. Further information is currently only available by payment of a fee for each household record. But I hope the list may be helpful to anyone researching specific families and that they will share any additional information they may find.
- 1939 Register
- The 1939 Register was taken on 29 September 1939. The information was used to produce identity cards and, once rationing was introduced in January 1940, to issue ration books. Information in the Register was also used to administer conscription and the direction of labour, and to monitor and control the movement of the population caused by military mobilisation and mass evacuation. As the 1931 census for England and Wales was destroyed by fire during the Second World War and no census was taken in 1941, the Register provides the most complete survey of the population of England and Wales between 1921 and 1951.
