Wartime Dallington

See Roy Iremonger Dallington a Village at War for an account of villagers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. There is also relevant material in Karen Bryant Moles book Six Miles from Every where. (Both full text available from the main Resources page). Other wartime topics will be added here.

Evacuees to Dallington

Some children were evacuated to Dallington during the war. For example:

  • Note originally posted on the entry for Yew Arch : “I’ve just been getting round to looking at my dad’s war time notes a bit more closely and notice that his class (4D) of Addey and Stanhope School was first evacuated to Dallington. He’s written on the back of an old postcard of Yew Arch (complete with period vehicle out front) “I was billeted here (with Reg Norris) in 1939/40 – Mrs Tutton, Mrs Bridges, maid Lena”. I see that the Tuttons are mentioned in ‘Dallington A Village At War’. Happy to send a scan of the postcard if wanted.”
  • Some more details about the school’s time in Burwash can be found at https://wartimememoriesproject.com/ww2/viewc.php?uid=1251
  • Message from Jenny:  “My father was evacuated to Dallington during the second World War. The details are quite sketchy, but I know that he attended the local school and stayed on a farm. I would love to take him on a trip down memory lane and come to visit. If anyone has any information on what farm this may have been, I would be really grateful.”  [Reply from editor]: “Hi Jen – if you give your father’s name, someone may remember him. There were still quite a few farms in Dallington during the war, so you may need more information to narrow it down.”
  • Message from Maureen Hague (who also left an account of family members at Coxs Mill): “I myself was evacuated as a young child to Great Worge Farm Brightling which does not seem far from Coxes Mill. My grandmother, |Emma Julia, youngest daughter of Charles and Jane ,b 1872 in Pulborough died there in 1941.
